TNI soldiers were killed while on peacekeeping duties in Lebanon after being attacked by Israel. Indonesia is urging the convening of an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting regarding this matter.

This was conveyed by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono via his X account on Tuesday (31/3/2026). Foreign Minister Sugiono submitted this request to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

“Indonesia spoke with UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres (30/3) following the death of Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeeping troops,” he wrote.

Indonesia has condemned the heinous attack. Indonesia asserts that the safety of UN peacekeeping troops cannot be compromised.

“Indonesia condemns this heinous attack. The safety and security of UN peacekeeping troops cannot be compromised and must be upheld at all times,” he stated.

“We appreciate the Secretary-General’s condolences and the UN’s willingness to work closely with Indonesia,” he continued.

Indonesia is calling for an emergency UN Security Council meeting to be held. Indonesia is requesting a swift investigation into the matter.

“In this context, we call for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, and a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation,” he said.

Three TNI Soldiers Killed

Previously, according to Reuters, a total of three TNI soldiers were killed while on peacekeeping duties in Lebanon. Two TNI soldiers died following an explosion from an unknown source near Bani Hayyan. Two other soldiers were injured in that explosion.

Meanwhile, another TNI soldier was killed on Sunday night (29/3). The victim, identified as Private Farizal Rhomadhon, died after a projectile exploded near one of the group’s positions near Adchit al-Qusayr village in southern Lebanon. Another peacekeeper was seriously injured at that time.

The death on Sunday was the first among UN peacekeeping troops in the new war between Israel and Hezbollah that erupted on 2 March.

“These are two separate incidents and we are investigating them as two separate incidents,” said UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that attacks on peacekeepers constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law and could be considered war crimes.

“We strongly condemn this unacceptable incident - peacekeepers must not be targeted,” said UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
