Chengdu (ANTARA) - The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in China has stated that it will open the Indonesian Consulate General in Chengdu, southwest China, to strengthen Indonesia’s network of representatives in the bamboo curtain country.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to China, Djauhari Oratmangun, in a keynote speech at the “Latest Developments in Indonesia – Chengdu 2026” event held on Friday (17/4) in Chengdu, said that the expansion of the network is being carried out following more than a decade during which China has become an important partner for Indonesia.

“For more than a decade, China has been one of Indonesia’s largest trading partners as well as an important source of investment,” he said.

Djauhari officially announced that preparations for the establishment of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Chengdu are underway.

In the future, the consulate general will be centred in Chengdu and will cover Sichuan as well as several areas in western China such as Shaanxi, Yunnan, Gansu, and Chongqing.

According to Djauhari, Chengdu is not only a city that is comfortable to live in, but also an important centre for innovation and industrial development, thus having unique advantages in connecting Indonesia with western China regions.

He emphasised that the opening of the consulate general is not merely an addition of a diplomatic institution, but also reflects Indonesia’s significant attention to the development potential of western China regions.

“Chengdu will become an important bridge between Indonesia and western China,” he said.

The event, organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in China, carried the theme “Stepping Together, Building Resilience” and served as a forum for exchanging views on Indonesia’s economic development focus and Indonesia-China cooperation opportunities.

Furthermore, at the event, Indonesia also conveyed plans to further open up sectors such as renewable energy, downstream industry, food security, digital economy, healthcare services, and the development of the new capital city.

Indonesia and Sichuan are also considered to have broad room for cooperation in the fields of bio-pharmaceuticals, green energy, green technology, as well as trade and investment.

Several companies assess that the opening of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Chengdu will become an important fulcrum in encouraging companies to expand abroad.

“Sichuan has advantages in health, high technology, and artificial intelligence, while Indonesia has abundant resources. This becomes the basis for both parties to build industrial chain synergies,” said Yuan Fei, head of Sichuan Shuyinqiao Business Service Co., Ltd.

Currently, his company has established the Indonesian National Pavilion at the Chengdu International Railway Port to promote Indonesian products entering the Chinese market while providing support for Sichuan companies that wish to invest in Indonesia through a two-way model, namely bringing in and stepping out.

“Sichuan and Indonesia both have very rich tourism resources that complement each other. In the last two years, more and more of my friends from Indonesia have come to Sichuan to enjoy unique scenery such as snow-capped mountains and glaciers,” said Jia Hang, Deputy Head of the International Department of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Multifunctional Trade Platform, to reporters.

Jia added that from an industrial structure perspective, both parties are also highly complementary. Indonesia is rich in resources such as petroleum, minerals, and forests, while Sichuan has advantages in energy processing and industrial systems, so both can form strong interactions in industrial development stages.

In 2024, Sichuan Zhihecheng Group cooperated with Indonesia’s Aladin Group to establish ZHC Aladin International Co., Ltd., which has invested in two car dealerships and one three-main-system electric vehicle maintenance centre (battery, motor, and electronic control system) in Indonesia.

“We are very optimistic about developments in Indonesia. Currently, ZHC Aladin has more than 130 employees in Jakarta and the number continues to grow,” said Vice President of Sichuan Zhihecheng Group, Zhang Ying.

Recently, Zhang accompanied partners from Indonesia to visit several institutions and companies in Chengdu in the fields of health and drones.

“Indonesia is known as an archipelagic country, so it has a large demand for drones for logistics, forest fire prevention, and mining inspections, while Chengdu has many innovative companies in the drone sector,” he said.

In recent years, economic, trade, and people-to-people exchange relations between Sichuan and Indonesia have become increasingly active. In 2017, the “Overseas Chengdu” workstation in Indonesia was established in Jakarta with the support of the Indonesian Chinese Entrepreneurs Association.

In 2020, direct flights between Chengdu and Jakarta were opened, greatly facilitating mobility between the two parties. Currently, several Sichuan companies such as New Hope Group, Dongfang Electric, Oriental Hope Group, Tongwei Group, and Bamo Technology have established stable business cooperation in Indonesia.
