Indonesia, the United States and Japan discuss the development of small modular reactors (SMRs)
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Energy Council (DEN) in cooperation with the United States and Japan hosted a three‑day conference on the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) in Jakarta, from 3–5 March 2026. The programme is conducted under the Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) initiative of the United States Department of State, a civil nuclear energy security assistance programme led by the United States with Japan as a contributing partner.
Dadan Kusdiana, the Secretary-General of DEN, at the opening of the Workshop on Small Modular Reactor Deployment Considerations for Indonesia in Jakarta, emphasised that DEN strengthens international cooperation with the United States and Japan in developing human resources (HR) capacity and nuclear governance to global standards.
The collaboration includes strengthening SMR design and regulatory frameworks, enhancing high-technology manufacturing competencies, and implementing stringent safety and security protocols.
“Nuclear energy offers a stable, low-emission energy solution and can underpin long-term economic growth. With advances in technologies such as SMR, nuclear development is now more adaptable and relevant for developing countries,” he said.
On the same occasion, Peter M. Haymond, Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy in Indonesia, said that together with Japan, the United States is honoured to be Indonesia’s trusted partner which has long collaborated in developing safe and responsible nuclear energy.
“American technology supports Indonesia’s efforts to build a safe and resilient energy future,” he added.
