The total fertility rate (TFR) stood at 2.14 children per woman in 2023 based on National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) data, Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono noted on Thursday.

He said 10-15 percent of couples of reproductive age experience infertility, meaning around 4-6 million of Indonesia’s 39.8 million couples require medical intervention to conceive.

According to 2025 World Health Organization (WHO) data, around 17.5 percent of adults globally, or one in six people, experience infertility.

Dante stressed that infertility is not merely a medical issue, but also an emotional challenge for couples hoping to build families.

He said a humane approach to advanced fertility care is important to ensure couples receive integrated and sustainable treatment.

He also highlighted growing public demand for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) services, with the number of patients increasing from 23,000 in 2021 to 36,000 in 2024.

“Indonesia currently has 59 hospitals in 15 provinces licensed to provide IVF services,” Dante said.

He noted that Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) has become one of the pioneers through its Yasmin Clinic.

The clinic is supported by specialists in obstetrics, gynecology, and andrology, including senior professors with extensive clinical experience.

Throughout 2025, the clinic recorded 95 pregnancies from 221 fertility treatment cycles.

The clinic provides services ranging from fertility stimulation and acupuncture to treatment for endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and recurrent miscarriages.

Dante expressed hope that the relaunch of the clinic would improve access to humane and technology-based fertility care.

“If future generations grow well, Indonesia will have a strong productive population by 2045 during the Golden Indonesia era,” he said.
