Jakarta (ANTARA) — The government has confirmed that surveillance and supplementary immunisation efforts are being intensified in response to a notification from Australia regarding two measles cases detected in foreign nationals with a travel history from Indonesia in February 2026.

Acting Director General of Disease Control at the Ministry of Health, Andi Saguni, said in Jakarta on Tuesday that the official International Health Regulation (IHR) notification from the Australian Health Authority was promptly followed up with strategic mitigation measures.

“As a swift response, we are strengthening measles disease surveillance and intensifying supplementary measles immunisation for school-age children, particularly in areas with the highest case burden throughout 2025–2026,” Andi Saguni said.

“Both individuals were confirmed positive through PCR testing after presenting symptoms of fever and rash,” he said.

In addition to strengthening surveillance and immunisation, the Ministry of Health has also placed healthcare facilities, including hospitals, on standby to anticipate and manage potential cases with complications.

“Communication, information and education efforts continue to be promoted so that the public adopts clean and healthy living practices, such as wearing masks, washing hands with soap, practising cough etiquette, and consuming a balanced nutritious diet,” Andi Saguni said.

According to Ministry of Health data, 11,094 confirmed measles cases were recorded throughout 2025. Meanwhile, as of February 2026, some 550 cases have been reported. Nevertheless, Andi stressed that no national extraordinary event (KLB) status for measles has been declared at this time.
