Indonesia-South Korea Cross-Border QRIS Officially Launched, Transactions Without Currency Exchange Now Possible
Bank Indonesia and the Bank of Korea have officially launched cross-border QR payment connectivity between Indonesia and South Korea, allowing Indonesian citizens to transact in South Korea using QRIS via domestic applications without needing to exchange foreign currency. Transactions are conducted directly in the local currencies of both countries, making them more efficient and low-cost.
This initiative forms part of the Joint Vision Statement (JVS) between President Prabowo Subianto and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, signed in South Korea on Tuesday (1/4).
The inauguration of the cross-border QR payment connectivity was conducted by Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo and Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Korea Sangdai Ryoo. The ceremony took place simultaneously in Indonesia and South Korea on 1 April 2026, marking the official availability of the service for use between the two countries.
Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo stated that this launch represents an important step in realising the shared vision of Indonesia and South Korea to build an integrated, efficient, and inclusive payment system as the foundation for digital economic connectivity between the two nations.
“The connectivity of cross-border QR payments not only facilitates transactions but also strengthens SMEs, enhances tourism, and opens new opportunities for businesses, thereby supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” said Perry.
In line with this, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Korea Chang Cheong-soo stated that the inauguration of the Indonesia-South Korea cross-border QR marks an important milestone reflecting the increasingly close cooperation between the two countries, particularly in strengthening the digital economy and finance.
“Going forward, we are committed to continuing to promote more strategic collaboration to strengthen payment system integration and support closer digital economic connectivity between Korea and Indonesia,” he said.
The inauguration ceremony in Jakarta was held at Bank Indonesia and attended by Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta as well as the Minister & Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of South Korea in Indonesia, Park Soo-deok.
In Seoul, the ceremony took place at the Bank of Korea with the attendance of Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Aida S. Budiman alongside Bank of Korea Deputy Governor Chang Cheong-soo.
The implementation of Indonesia-South Korea cross-border QRIS is the result of synergy between Bank Indonesia, the Bank of Korea, the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), the Korea Financial Telecommunications & Clearings Institute (KFTC), and various participating financial institutions. Both central banks are committed to ensuring a safe, reliable, and efficient cross-border payment system to strengthen financial resilience and support inclusive economic growth.
Since its launch, QRIS has been a key driver of digital payment transformation while strengthening Indonesia’s economic sovereignty, with the number of users reaching 60.77 million as of February 2026.
The utilisation of cross-border QRIS has also continued to increase in various partner countries. Overall, the frequency of transactions by foreign tourists in Indonesia (inbound) has been recorded higher than transactions by Indonesians abroad (outbound). In 2025, inbound transactions reached 5,892,621, surpassing outbound transactions of 1,681,112. This data shows the positive contribution of cross-border QRIS to the domestic economy.
As of February 2026, cooperation with Thailand since August 2022 has recorded 1.64 million transactions worth Rp656.27 billion. Cooperation with Malaysia, which began in May 2023, has recorded a larger volume of 10.66 million transactions worth Rp2.75 trillion.
Meanwhile, cross-border QRIS with Singapore, launched in November 2023, has recorded 554,510 transactions worth Rp179.28 billion. The latest cooperation with Japan since August 2025 shows positive development with 5,088 transactions worth Rp428.80 million.
