Indonesia Shifts Oil and LPG Imports from Middle East to America, Africa, and Beyond
Indonesia is redirecting the sources of its oil and LPG imports, which previously came from the Middle East region, to several other countries following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. This step is being taken to maintain the stability of the national energy supply amid geopolitical uncertainties.
As reported by detikFinance, the Secretary of the Directorate General of Oil and Gas (Migas) at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Muhammad Rizwi Jilanisaf Hisjam, stated that the alternative countries include America, Africa, Asia, and the ASEAN region.
“We are redirecting import sources that originally came from Middle Eastern countries affected by issues in the Strait of Hormuz to other countries such as America, Africa, Asia, and ASEAN countries,” said Rizwi during a meeting with Commission XII of the DPR on Wednesday (8/4/2026).
Other steps taken by the government to maintain energy stocks and supplies include regulating the consumption of fuel oil (BBM) and LPG in a reasonable and prudent manner. This is marked by the issuance of a Regulatory Letter from the Directorate General of Migas and BPH Migas.
Furthermore, the Ministry of ESDM has instructed all K3S to prioritise domestic supplies over exports.
“This means that domestic production is endeavoured to be fully utilised as raw materials for domestic oil needs,” explained Rizwi.
On the other hand, the government is optimising the operations of domestic refineries and seeking additional LPG supplies, both from imports and domestic production. LPG previously allocated for industry is now being directed to meet the needs of 3kg LPG for the public.
“We are also seeking other LPG sources from countries in Asia and ASEAN. In addition, we have instructed private LPG refineries to prioritise offers to Pertamina Patra Niaga, which previously sold their production to industry, but we are proposing priority to private LPG refineries to offer their production first to Pertamina Patra Niaga, whose LPG is used for public needs,” clarified Rizwi.
Rizwi conveyed that from these steps, the supply of Fuel Oil (BBM) and LPG is assured to remain safe. “We can affirm that the national supply of BBM and LPG is currently in a safe condition,” stated Rizwi.
