Indonesia Responds to Israel–Iran Conflict: Prabowo Ready to Mediate and Vigilant Against Wider War
JAKARTA – Israel launched an attack on Tehran, Iran, on Saturday morning, 28 February 2026 (local time). Following the assault, Israel immediately closed its airspace and declared an emergency state to anticipate the possibility of retaliatory strikes.
According to British media The Guardian, the airspace closure was implemented as a precautionary measure against potential drone and missile attacks from Iran.
An Israeli military spokesperson stated that the attack was a preliminary step to eliminate threats to the country.
Several U.S. officials and sources aware of the operation indicated that the United States was involved in the strike.
The attack occurred as the U.S. deployed a large fleet of fighter jets and naval vessels to the Middle East as part of pressure on Iran to reach an agreement regarding its nuclear programme.
In response to the escalation, the Indonesian government expressed its readiness to facilitate dialogue and conduct mediation to ease military tensions in the Middle East.
President Prabowo Subianto was reported to be willing to travel to Tehran if both parties approved the mediation initiative.
“The Indonesian government, in this case the President of the Republic of Indonesia, has conveyed its readiness to facilitate dialogue for the restoration of a conducive security environment and, should both parties agree, the Indonesian President is prepared to travel to Tehran to conduct mediation,” stated the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its X account @Kemlu_RI on Saturday, 28 February 2026.
The negotiations concerning the nuclear programme were seen as one of the triggers behind escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, with U.S. support.
“Indonesia deeply regrets the failure of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, which has resulted in military escalation in the Middle East,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Indonesia urged all parties to exercise restraint and prioritise dialogue and diplomacy. In accordance with its independent and active foreign policy, Indonesia emphasised the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations and resolving conflicts peacefully.
Furthermore, the government assessed that increased tensions in the Middle East could potentially disrupt regional stability as well as global peace and security.
“Indonesian nationals in affected areas are advised to remain calm, remain vigilant, follow the directions of local authorities, and maintain communication with the nearest Indonesian representation,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
