Indonesia QRIS Expansion: South Korea Launch Set for April 2026
Cross-border payment system aims to boost tourism and reduce transaction costs
Indonesia is set to expand its digital payment footprint globally, with QRIS transactions soon available in South Korea as part of a broader push for seamless cross-border payments.
QRIS Goes Global with South Korea Launch
Bank Indonesia has announced that QRIS will be officially launched in South Korea in April 2026, enabling Indonesian users to make seamless transactions abroad. The move marks a significant step in expanding Indonesia’s digital payment ecosystem internationally.
This rollout follows ongoing efforts to strengthen financial connectivity and support the growing adoption of cashless payments.
Bilateral Agreement Strengthens Cooperation
The initiative builds on a prior agreement between Bank Indonesia and the Bank of Korea, formalised during a high-level meeting in early 2026. It also follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in July 2024 to enhance payment system collaboration.
Both central banks are working closely to ensure smooth implementation and interoperability between the two countries’ systems.
Boosting Tourism and Consumer Convenience
The introduction of QRIS in South Korea is expected to significantly improve convenience for tourists from both nations. Travellers will be able to make payments more easily without relying heavily on cash or traditional card systems.
This development is also aligned with efforts to support tourism recovery and cross-border consumer spending.
Lower Costs Through Local Currency Framework
The integration of QRIS is tied to the Local Currency Transaction (LCT) framework, which has been in place since September 2024. This system allows transactions to be conducted directly in local currencies.
As a result, users can benefit from reduced foreign exchange costs and more efficient payment processing.
Driving Regional Economic Activity
Authorities believe the expanded payment connectivity will stimulate broader economic activity, including trade, tourism, and consumption. Easier transactions are expected to encourage more cross-border engagement between Indonesia and South Korea.
The initiative reflects a growing trend in Asia towards interconnected digital payment systems that support regional growth.
The QRIS expansion into South Korea signals Indonesia’s ambition to lead in regional digital payments, strengthening economic ties while enhancing everyday convenience for users.
