Indonesia Now Has Crash Test Facility, Capable of Frontal and Lateral Testing
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Balai Pengujian Laik Jalan dan Sertifikasi Kendaraan Bermotor (BPLJSKB) in Cibitung, Bekasi, West Java, now possesses a crash test facility for motor vehicles. The presence of this facility represents an important step in enhancing vehicle safety standards in Indonesia. With this facility, the vehicle testing process no longer relies solely on administrative and basic technical testing but can also measure the level of vehicle protection in the event of an accident. “There is frontal and lateral crash testing (front and side),” said Bowo to Kompas.com at the location on Tuesday (5/5/2026). Bowo stated that the testing follows international standards or United Nations Regulation (UNR), including vehicle speed during the test. For crash testing, the vehicle will travel at a certain speed before hitting a prepared barrier. From there, the testing team will examine the level of vehicle damage up to the protection for passengers inside the cabin. “According to UNR, the crash test speed is 56 km per hour. If the speed is minus 0 but may be plus 1. That means it cannot be minus, for both frontal and side,” he said. His explanation is that the vehicle must not travel below 56 kilometres per hour, but it is still allowed to be slightly higher, a maximum of 1 kilometre per hour. As information, a crash test is a vehicle safety test by simulating an accident under certain conditions. The crash test aims to determine the vehicle’s ability to protect the driver and passengers during an impact. Furthermore, the existence of the crash test facility at BPLJSKB is also expected to support the national automotive industry, particularly in the type testing process for new vehicles before they are marketed to consumers. With this facility, manufacturers can conduct safety testing domestically without having to send vehicles abroad. In addition to being more efficient, the vehicle certification process can also proceed more quickly.
