Indonesia Not in Energy Emergency, Finance Minister Purbaya Assures State Budget Remains Strong
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has assured that Indonesia is not in an energy emergency situation, even as several countries anticipate an energy crisis.
According to him, the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) remains sufficiently strong to face global pressures.
He stated that the current fiscal condition is still capable of withstanding the rise in energy prices due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
He affirmed that, with the current energy price assumptions, the APBN condition remains safe until the end of the year.
Nevertheless, the final decision will still depend on future directives from the leadership.
“But at the present time, until the end of the year with the current prices, we can still hold the APBN. It depends on the leadership’s decisions later. But I offer that it is safe,” he said.
As long as energy supplies are still available, Indonesia’s situation is assessed as not yet entering the energy emergency category, although vigilance must still be heightened.
“This is still available in supply. So if we say emergency, no. But we must keep preparing for the future,” he stated.
Previously, the Philippines became one of the countries that announced a national energy emergency.
This declaration was issued just hours after the Philippine Ministry of Energy stated plans to boost coal-fired power plant production to curb the surge in electricity tariffs.
“A national energy emergency is hereby declared in view of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the danger it poses to the availability and stability of the country’s energy supply,” read the executive order released on Tuesday night, quoted from AFP, Tuesday (24/3/2026).
The order authorises the Philippine Department of Energy to make advance payments of 15 percent to secure fuel contracts while taking direct action against hoarding or unjust profiteering.
