Indonesia reiterates its commitment to transforming the forestry sector through the Multi-Use Forestry (MUK) strategy at the Global Summit: Advancing Sustainable Forest-Based Bioeconomy Approaches in Vienna, Austria. This strategy is presented as Indonesia’s concrete action in implementing Sustainable Forest Management to boost global forest productivity. Krisdianto, Director of Levies and Administration of Forest Products (IPHH) at the Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut), stated in a Jakarta briefing on Thursday that strengthening a forest-based bioeconomy in Indonesia now has a strong legal footing through Law Number 6 of 2023 (UU Cipta Kerja). ‘The benefits of forests that can yield economic gains are no longer solely dependent on timber; they also include non-timber forest products, environmental services, and ecotourism,’ Krisdianto said. Furthermore, Krisdianto added that this transformation has been accompanied by revisions to the Work Plan (RKU) and the Annual Work Plan (RKT) by permit holders to maximise the forest’s economic potential in an inclusive manner. ‘Sustainable forest management is not only the government’s task, but the responsibility of all parties, especially those who benefit from forests. Indonesia fully supports the Vienna Call for Actions as a global guide for the future,’ he said. The high-level meeting was opened by Norbert Totschnig, Minister of Federal Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Austria.
