Indonesia imposes sanctions on Google for non-compliance with Child Protection Regulation
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has stated that it is issuing a red flag and sanctions to the technology company Google, owner of the digital platform YouTube, for not showing intent to comply with the provisions of PP Tunas.
“The government is giving a red note to Google, which oversees YouTube. Based on the results of an examination by the Directorate General of Digital Space Supervision on 7 April, it was found that YouTube has not met its compliance obligations and has not or has not yet indicated intent in the near future to follow the applicable law,” said Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid at the Ministry of Communication and Digital office in Central Jakarta on Thursday.
Discussing the platforms’ non-compliance with Government Regulation number 17 of 2025 on the Protection and Governance of Electronic System Operators in Child Protection (PP Tunas), Meutya stated that the Indonesian government is firmly imposing sanctions on Google as the owner of YouTube in accordance with legal provisions.
Following the procedures in the said regulation, Google has received sanctions in the form of a reprimand via a letter from the Director General of Digital Space Supervision of the Ministry of Communication and Digital.
“Of course, the sanctions are gradual, while still hoping for a change in attitude from Google’s side, and for today we are giving a warning letter,” said Meutya.
The situation faced by Google is in stark contrast to the Meta platform, which has shown full compliance with PP Tunas. The government appreciates Meta, which oversees Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, for finally complying with the provisions to restrict its social media platforms for users under 16 years old.
As of Thursday at 17.50 WIB, there are three digital platform owners that have fully complied with the provisions of PP Tunas, namely Meta (Threads, Instagram, Facebook), X, and Bigo Live.
PP Tunas officially takes effect on 28 March 2026 in Indonesia, targeting eight digital platforms in the initial implementation, namely Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, Bigo Live, YouTube, TikTok, and Roblox.
