Indonesia Finally Issues Official Condolences Over the Death of Khamenei
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, the Indonesian government has officially expressed condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, following an attack by the United States and Israel. The condolence letter was handed to Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi by Foreign Minister Sugiono in Jakarta.
‘We can express our condolences in any way. Through any media. I think a formal letter is more official,’ Sugiono said at the Fairmont Hotel, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 4 February.
He also said Indonesia’s stance consistently pushes for de-escalation and a peaceful settlement through diplomatic channels.
‘We want de-escalation. Then the situation subsides, right? And we have already conveyed that… we regret the failure of negotiations which led to the situation that occurred,’ Sugiono said at the Fairmont Hotel, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, 4 March.
Sugiono emphasised the importance of respecting fundamental principles in international relations, especially sovereignty and territorial integrity of a state. He also stated that all parties involved should exercise restraint to prevent the situation from deteriorating.
‘Nevertheless, we reiterate the importance of all countries respecting the principles of sovereignty and the territorial integrity of other states,’ he said.
‘And… we hope all parties can restrain themselves,’ he added.
On that occasion, Sugiono revealed that the Indonesian President had expressed willingness to act as mediator if both conflicting sides agreed.
‘And the President has already expressed, what was it, his willingness to be mediator if both sides agree and consent,’ he concluded.
