Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Republic of Indonesia’s Consulate General (KJRI) in San Francisco is exploring cooperation with the US state of Alaska, particularly in the energy and natural resources sectors. This was conveyed by Consul General Yohpy Ichsan Wardana in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday (1/5). According to Yohpy, Indonesia and Alaska possess complementary characteristics, making it necessary to continue developing cooperation opportunities. “Alaska excels in the energy, fisheries, logistics, and resource management sectors, while Indonesia offers a large market, strong economic growth, and a strategic position in Southeast Asia,” he said. The visit, which took place on 27–28 April, serves as an initial step to open more structured cooperation channels with Alaska. During the visit, KJRI San Francisco met with several stakeholders, including the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, the Alaska Oil and Gas Association (AOGA), and the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED). Alaska, with its large reserves of oil, gas, and LNG, is seen as a potential partner to support Indonesia’s energy diversification. In return, the Alaskan side expressed interest in the prospects of Indonesia’s growing market, according to KJRI’s statement. Yohpy stated that they also explored the potential for exporting Alaskan LNG to Asia, including Indonesia, as well as technological cooperation to enhance oil and gas production efficiency. Besides energy, Indonesia sees opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the fisheries sector, including seafood commodity trade, frozen supply chain development, seafood processing, and quality standardisation. In a meeting with the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation, KJRI introduced Danantara Indonesia as a potential partner for institutional cooperation and knowledge exchange regarding long-term investment fund management. KJRI San Francisco also explored opportunities for educational and research cooperation with the University of Alaska Fairbanks in fields such as engineering, energy systems, and disaster technology. “Alaska represents a new economic frontier relevant to strengthening Indonesia’s sub-national diplomacy in the United States,” KJRI stated.
