Jakarta — The Indonesian Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has expressed regret over the failure of negotiations between the United States and Iran conducted in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, 27 February 2026.

The nuclear-related negotiations failed and are seen as a trigger for escalating conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States.

“Indonesia deeply regrets the failure of negotiations between the US and Iran, which has resulted in military escalation in the Middle East region,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on its X account @Kemlu_RI on Saturday, 28 February 2026.

Beyond expressing regret, Indonesia has also called on all parties to exercise restraint and prioritise dialogue and diplomacy.

“The Indonesian Government, on behalf of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, conveys its readiness to facilitate dialogue to restore a conducive security environment and, if approved by both parties, the Indonesian President is willing to travel to Tehran to conduct mediation,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

Indonesia also assessed that heightened tensions in the Middle East could potentially disrupt regional stability as well as global peace and security.

“Indonesian nationals in affected areas are advised to remain calm, remain vigilant, follow the guidance of local authorities, and maintain communication with the nearest Indonesian diplomatic mission,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

Previously, nuclear talks held in Geneva, Switzerland between the US and Iran reached an impasse.

In response to the deadlock, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on all American citizens still in Iran to immediately leave the country.

Rubio also requested that US citizens refrain from travelling to Iran.

Following the impasse, tit-for-tat attacks between Israel and Iran occurred.

Israel struck Tehran with missiles on Saturday, 28 February 2026 morning.

In response to the attack, Iran prepared to launch its own retaliatory strikes.
