Indonesia Commits to Purchasing 50 Boeing Aircraft as Part of Prabowo–Trump Tariff Agreement
The Indonesian government has confirmed it will proceed with plans to purchase 50 Boeing aircraft as part of the implementation of the trade tariff agreement between President Prabowo Subianto and President Donald Trump.
The plan will be followed up by Investment Minister and BKPM Head Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, who also serves as CEO of Danantara, the state-owned enterprise management body.
“From this Reciprocal Tariff Agreement, there are several activities involving the Ministry of Investment as well as Danantara, including the plan to purchase 50 Boeing aircraft,” Rosan said during an online press conference on Friday (20 February 2026), following the signing of the US–Indonesia tariff agreement.
Rosan affirmed that the government would promptly continue technical discussions with Boeing to realise the commitment. He noted that initial communications had in fact already taken place.
“We will continue talks with Boeing, although preliminary discussions have already been held,” he said.
Previously, President Prabowo had announced plans to strengthen Garuda Indonesia as the national flag carrier. He stated that the addition of new aircraft was an urgent necessity to expand Garuda’s role in the aviation industry.
“We do need to expand Garuda. Garuda is our pride, our national flag carrier. Garuda was born during our war of independence, so it must be a symbol of Indonesia,” Prabowo said on 17 July 2025.
He affirmed his commitment to strengthening the state-owned carrier, including through the procurement of new fleet aircraft.
“I am determined to expand Garuda. For that, we need new aircraft. There is no issue — Boeing aircraft are also quite good,” he stated.
The plan to purchase 50 aircraft forms part of the government’s strategy to significantly strengthen Garuda’s fleet whilst reaffirming Indonesia’s trade cooperation commitments with the United States.
