The Indonesian government faces a policy dilemma with no truly comfortable options.

The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has strongly condemned the Israeli attack in southern Lebanon, which is deemed to increase risks to the safety of UN peacekeeping troops.

This stance was expressed after the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the initial report of the UN investigation regarding the incident that killed three TNI soldiers at the end of March 2026.

The Indonesian government is also urging the UN to conduct a comprehensive investigation into a series of attacks against TNI personnel involved in the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission.

Acting Director of Peace and International Security at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Veronica Rompis, stated that the government has received the initial results of the investigation into two incidents that occurred on 29 and 30 March.

“The Indonesian government has noted the investigation results and requests that the UN complete the investigation thoroughly,” she said in a press statement in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4).

She emphasised that Indonesia is also pushing for those responsible to be prosecuted and held accountable immediately.

Veronica added that the report received so far is still preliminary, so the government is still awaiting the final investigation results.

According to her, if the final investigation results align with the initial findings pointing to Israeli military involvement, Indonesia is prepared to take firm diplomatic steps.

“We emphasise that such actions constitute a serious violation of international law,” she stated.

The Indonesian government will also ask the UN to urge relevant authorities to conduct investigations, prosecutions, and ensure full accountability for the perpetrators.

Furthermore, Veronica assessed that the incident is inseparable from the deteriorating security situation in Lebanon.

“These incidents are inseparable from the worsening situation in Lebanon. Indonesia continues to strongly condemn Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, which significantly increase the risks faced by UN peacekeeping personnel,” she added.

Based on the UN’s initial findings, the incidents that killed three TNI soldiers at different times are suspected to originate from Israeli tank projectiles, and possibly also triggered by explosive devices linked to the Hezbollah group.

Spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yvonne Mewengkang, conveyed that Indonesia’s involvement in the mission is part of a strong global commitment to maintaining world peace and security.

The United Nations (UN) released initial investigation results regarding the incidents on 29 and 30 March that killed three TNI soldiers while on duty in the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission.

The government, through the Cabinet Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, stated that no decision has been made to withdraw TNI from UNIFIL in Lebanon following the incident that killed three soldiers. A full evaluation is underway.

The government has not yet taken an official stance regarding the UN investigation results on the deaths of TNI soldiers in the peacekeeping mission as part of UNIFIL in Lebanon, including the withdrawal of troops.

The UN confirmed that the death of Indonesian UNIFIL personnel on 29 March was caused by fire from an Israeli Merkava tank, while the second incident was triggered by an IED.
