President Prabowo Subianto held a bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae Myung, at the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Korea, Cheong Wa Dae (Blue House), on Wednesday (1/4). The meeting served as an opportunity to strengthen relations between the two countries amid increasingly complex global dynamics.

Prabowo stated that his first state visit to the Republic of Korea holds strategic significance, reflecting Indonesia’s commitment to bolstering the close partnership that has long existed.

“For me, this first state visit is very important. I regard South Korea as a close friend of Indonesia, and I wish to enhance this cooperation,” he said, as quoted from a press release on Wednesday (1/4).

Prabowo also emphasised that long-term inter-state relations are inseparable from dynamics, including potential differences in perspectives. Nevertheless, openness and honesty are key to maintaining constructive relations.

The Head of State affirmed that Indonesia and the Republic of Korea share strong common interests, particularly as countries in the Pacific region and as trade-oriented nations. According to Prabowo, the two countries have the potential to complement each other in various strategic sectors.

“We are both Pacific countries. We are both trading nations. We need good relations for the economic welfare of both our countries, and perhaps we have complementary roles,” he said.

Furthermore, Prabowo assessed that South Korea’s rapid progress in industry, science, and technology can synergise with Indonesia’s strengths in abundant natural resources and a large market.

In addition to economic aspects, Prabowo stressed the importance of cooperation in maintaining stability and peace, especially amid rising global uncertainties.

“My state visit here is taking place amid a world situation full of uncertainties and dangers. Therefore, relations between countries like Indonesia and South Korea are becoming increasingly important,” Prabowo explained.

In that context, he expressed his hope to elevate the special strategic partnership between Indonesia and South Korea to a more comprehensive partnership. Prabowo also encouraged ministers from both countries to immediately work towards realising this enhancement of cooperation.

“Let us ask our ministers to strive to achieve this higher role,” Prabowo concluded.
