Jakarta (ANTARA) - The governments of Indonesia and Malaysia are ready to strengthen collaboration in research and higher education, particularly in the fields of food security, green economy, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence (AI).

This was announced following a meeting between Indonesia’s Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Mendiktisaintek) Brian Yuliarto and Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education Zambry Abdul Kadir some time ago.

“This collaboration represents a strategic step to strengthen the contribution of research and innovation from both countries in addressing global challenges,” said Minister Brian in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology emphasised that synergy in expertise between researchers and universities in both countries is vital capital for accelerating research commercialisation and delivering tangible solutions for the public.

Meanwhile, Minister Zambry conveyed that both countries possess complementary expertise that should be utilised optimally.

“In principle, we have agreed to form working groups in these fields by identifying experts from Malaysia and Indonesia to collaborate in developing the agreed areas,” said Zambry Abdul Kadir.

Both parties have agreed in principle to establish working groups and collaborative clusters in priority areas. Identification of experts from Indonesia and Malaysia will also be carried out to collaborate on developing the agreed research fields.

The collaboration will involve a number of selected universities in both countries, as well as researchers who are part of the Malaysia–Indonesia Academic Consortium (KAMI) network.

Preliminary discussions have also commenced between representatives of Malaysia’s higher education authority and the Directorate General of Higher Education within Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology to map out the scope and implementation framework of the cooperation.

During the same visit, Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education also visited the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) and engaged in dialogue with Malaysian students to explore joint development potential in agriculture and food security.

The strengthening of the Indonesia–Malaysia partnership reaffirms the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology’s commitment to expanding productive international collaboration, accelerating talent mobility, and ensuring that research and innovation deliver tangible impact for national and regional development.
