Indonesia and Korea Discuss Trade and Investment
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The Indonesian Trade Minister, Mari Elka Pangestu, held a bilateral meeting with Korean Trade Minister, Kim Jong Hoon, to discuss bilateral, regional, and multilateral issues.
The meeting was held after Mari Elka attended the funeral of the late former Korean President, Kim Dae-Jung.
A press release issued by the Trade Department stated that both ministers discussed efforts to increase trade and investment activities.
It is reported that Indonesia and Korea will form a join task force for many activities including trade, investment, energy, forestry, information facilities and technology.
It is scheduled that the group working on join-task-force will meet before end of this year.
Total bilateral trade between Indonesia and Korea up until 2008 reached US$16 billion while it was US$10.8 billion in 2007.
The total trade until April 2009 was down at into US$3.2 billion due to the global crisis and lower commodity prices.
Last year, exports from Indonesia to Korea were US$9.1 billion and imports to Indonesia were US$6.9 billion.
Indonesia is exporting gas, oil, coal, rubber, timber and manufacturing products like electronics and textile products.
