India Eyes Investment in Metal Processing Industry in Indonesia

Jakarta – Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has stated that the Indian government through its Ministry of Steel has shown interest in investing in the metal processing industry in Indonesia.

Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot said the Indian government plans to encourage companies from India to invest in the metal sector in Indonesia.

“They will encourage investment from Indian companies to conduct investments in Indonesia, particularly in the metal industry,” Yuliot said in a statement.

This interest was discussed at a meeting between Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot and Secretary General of India’s Ministry of Steel Sandeep Poundrik at the ESDM Ministry office on Tuesday (24 February 2026).

Beyond investment, both parties also discussed cooperation opportunities in developing capital goods industry, including machinery, heavy equipment, and various factory equipment to support the sustainability of the metal processing programme in Indonesia.

“Thirdly, also discussed was the development of capital goods in the form of research and innovation that is more efficient in energy utilisation,” said Yuliot.

He added that further discussions on this cooperation would be held at ministerial level. India will submit a draft memorandum of understanding (MoU).

For its part, the ESDM Ministry will consult with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the MoU framework before further discussions proceed to the signature stage by the ministers.

According to Yuliot, the synergy between Indonesia and India represents a strategic step to strengthen national energy resilience whilst opening opportunities for sustainable investment that provides long-term economic benefits.

The meeting also discussed the development of critical minerals and the construction of supporting facilities for steel production in Indonesia.
