In the Midst of Crisis, Majalaya Textile Hub's Revival Grows Through the Sarung Festival
Majalaya textile centre, in Bandung Regency, West Java, is thriving again amid the crisis through the Majalaya Sarung Festival (FSM), held over four days at the end of February 2026. The event features a range of activities and exhibitions, attracting hundreds of participants from diverse backgrounds.
Ahmad Fauzan, a committee representative, said the Festival Sarung Majalaya brings together all stakeholders, including government, the community, businesspeople, academics, religious leaders, and residents of Majalaya. The event is expected to revive Majalaya’s identity as a textile district and to strengthen the local economy based on culture.
‘I hope it rekindles Majalaya’s identity as a historically textile area,’ he said on Thursday (5 March 2026).
He noted that local MSMEs as well as cooperatives and Subang artisan associations participated in the event, including the Teralis Herbalis forum. Dishes typical of the Bandung Regency, such as pepes ikan and berondong, were prepared by various Majalaya MSMEs.
The programme continued with Sundanese cultural performances at Alun-alun Majalaya and a visit to Gedong Wiranatakusumah, a historic house. There was also a discussion themed ‘City Branding Majalaya as a textile city and the marketing of Majalaya’s textile products.’
‘During the four days of the event, the value of Majalaya Sarung sales transactions was recorded at around Rp 20 million,’ he said.
A young disabled designer, Nadya Amalia Yahya, showcased a collection of clothing made from Majalaya sarung. Attending were representatives from the Directorate General of Vocational Education and Special Education, the Ministry of Education and Culture. The West Java Regional Center for the Preservation of Culture and several textile agencies in Majalaya, along with other entrepreneurs, were also present. ‘The Majalaya Sarung Festival is not merely a cultural celebration, but also a platform for local creativity,’ he said.
