In Response to Police Reform Commission, Kompolnas Seeks Stronger Institution
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Kompolnas supports the recommendations of the Police Reform Acceleration Commission to strengthen and make this police oversight body more independent.
“Strengthening Kompolnas is a recommendation from the Police Reform Acceleration Commission, and we hope this will soon be realised,” said Kompolnas Commissioner Mohammad Choirul Anam when contacted by reporters on Tuesday (5/5/2026).
“This hope did not just emerge yesterday in the Police Reform Acceleration process, but also from various public voices,” he explained.
According to him, the police side has also responded positively to the plan to strengthen Kompolnas, particularly in the oversight aspect.
“Police colleagues also welcome the strengthening of Kompolnas in the scope of oversight,” he said.
“Strengthening oversight, both external and internal, is significant to ensure our police become increasingly professional,” he explained.
Anam also emphasised the importance of synergy between Kompolnas and Polri so that services to the public improve and no violations occur.
“Synergistic cooperation between the police and Kompolnas is expected to ensure the best services for the public and no violations.” he stated.
At the end of his statement, Cak Anam also emphasised that this oversight synergy is expected to become stronger, including if Kompolnas is given a strengthening mandate by the President or through legislation.
Kompolnas is recommended to become a stronger, independent institution, no longer consisting of ex officio officials from other institutions, but rather people from diverse elements.
Kompolnas recommendations will then be binding and must be implemented by the National Police Chief.
“The third important point is the existence of Kompolnas whose authority is expanded, and Kompolnas decisions are binding so they must be implemented by the National Police Chief,” said a member of the Police Reform Acceleration Commission as well as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra, at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Monday (5/5/2026).
