In parliamentary session, China's PM reiterates opposition to 'Taiwan independence'
Beijing — China reaffirmed its commitment to reunification with Taiwan and rejected any moves toward ‘Taiwan independence’ or external interference. ‘We will fully implement the comprehensive party policy in the new era regarding the Taiwan question. We will adhere to the ’One China’ principle and the ‘1992 Consensus’ and firmly oppose the separatist forces seeking ‘Taiwan independence’ and oppose foreign interference,’ said Premier Li Qiang at the opening of the National People’s Congress (NPC) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday, 5 March 2026.
Prime Minister Li delivered the remarks before 2,773 NPC deputies and 2,078 CPPCC members who are in session for the annual ‘Two Sessions’ from 4-12 March 2026.
‘We will promote exchanges, cooperation, and integrated development on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. People on both sides of the Strait are encouraged to work together to inherit and safeguard Chinese culture,’ Li continued.
Li also noted that the Chinese government will implement policies designed to ensure equal treatment for Taiwan compatriots to improve their welfare on both sides of the Strait.
‘By working together, all the people will realise the great goal of national rejuvenation,’ added Li.
The session also formally launched China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), outlining economic, social, technological, security, and national development directions for the next five years.
In the final chapter, Chapter 60 titled “Promoting Peaceful Cross-Strait Development and Advancing National Reunification Efforts” states that the government intends over the next five years to ‘carry out the comprehensive strategy of the Communist Party of China in the new era to resolve the Taiwan issue, firmly combat separatist forces that advocate ’Taiwan independence’ and oppose external interference’.
‘Cross-strait economic cooperation will be pursued with policies beneficial to Taiwan residents and Taiwanese enterprises. Taiwan people and enterprises will be guided to actively develop on the Chinese mainland, participate in the national regional development strategy and the Belt and Road Initiative, and build a joint market on both sides of the Strait.’
‘The government will also support Fujian Province to build a demonstration zone for high-quality cross-strait integrated development, and advance key cross-strait cooperation platforms in Pingtan, Kunshan, and Dongguan, as well as cross-Strait industrial cooperation zones.’
‘Additionally, the government will support the development of cross-strait financial markets and encourage qualified Taiwanese companies to list on mainland Chinese stock exchanges.’
‘Going forward, the government will promote cross-strait exchanges and economic and cultural cooperation, expanding people-to-people mobility and encouraging interaction between more communities on both sides.’
