Construction of barriers at Way Kambas National Park in Lampung has begun. The fence around Way Kambas is expected to resolve the conflict between residents and elephants that has persisted for 43 years.

“The problem faced by Way Kambas National Park, including the most important one, is this conflict between elephants and humans, which has been ongoing for decades. Does anyone remember the year? 1983, so it’s been 43 years,” said Raja Juli in his statement on Thursday (26/3/2026).

Raja Juli previously reported proposals from several village heads and sub-district chiefs for building a 11 km fence at Way Kambas to Prabowo. The proposal was positively received by Prabowo, who even instructed the construction of barriers along the entire Way Kambas, totalling 138 km.

“Thanks to reports from national park colleagues, strengthened by the Regent, and strengthened by the Governor, I reported to Mr President, alhamdulillah, today the soft launching of the Way Kambas National Park barrier construction, which we have wanted for a long time, is taking place,” he said.

Raja Juli stated that the fence construction at Way Kambas is targeted to be completed no later than the end of 2026. This barrier is hoped to permanently end the human-elephant conflict, which previously caused economic losses, security issues, safety concerns, and even fatalities in the community.

“No need to do it in stages over several years; at the latest by the end of the year, in 4-5 months it will be finished, at the latest by the end of the year,” he said.

Furthermore, Raja Juli received direct instructions from Prabowo to improve all National Parks in Indonesia. Way Kambas National Park itself has received special attention from Prabowo, which will later be made a pilot project for other national parks.

“This barrier construction is part of Mr President Prabowo Subianto’s grand plan to improve the 57 National Parks,” he said.

“Mr President has instructed me to improve our national parks, and we make Way Kambas a pilot project, a model, because once again, Mr President Prabowo Subianto’s love for wildlife as well as for the people of Lampung,” he continued.

In this soft launching, Raja Juli was accompanied by Lampung Governor Rahmat Mirzani Djausal, Pangdam XXI Radin Inten Major General TNI Kristomei Sianturi, Lampung Police Chief Inspector General Pol Helfi Assegaf, and East Lampung Regent Ela Siti Nuryamah. In addition to the soft launching, Raja Juli also held halalbihalal with all sub-district chiefs and village heads in the areas around Way Kambas.

Previously, President Prabowo allocated a presidential assistance budget (Banpres) of around Rp 839 billion for building fences and canals in the Way Kambas National Park area, Lampung. That budget will also be used to support ecosystem restoration in the conservation area.
