REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump stated that he has asked Chinese President Xi Jinping not to supply armaments to Iran. Previously, Trump had announced threats to impose 50 percent tariffs on any country sending weapons to Tehran.

In an interview with Fox Business Network (FBN) on the programme “Mornings with Maria,” broadcast on Wednesday (15/4/2026), Trump disclosed that the request for China not to supply weapons to Iran was conveyed via a letter to Xi Jinping.

“I wrote him a letter asking him not to do that, and he replied to my letter basically saying that he wouldn’t do that,” he said.

Trump did not mention when his letter to Xi Jinping was sent. In the FBN interview, Trump also stated that he does not expect changes in the global oil market due to the war against Iran and changes in Venezuela to affect the dynamics of his scheduled meeting with Xi next month.

“He is someone who needs oil. We don’t,” Trump said.

Meanwhile, via a post on his Social Truth account, Trump stated that he has permanently opened the Strait of Hormuz.

Previously, Trump had announced that the US military would blockade the Strait of Hormuz. This was stated after US-Iran negotiations held in Islamabad, Pakistan, last week, yielded no results.
