Import of Oil from Russia, Bahlil Assures No Disruption to Indonesia's Agreement with the US
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia has assured that the plan to import crude oil from Russia will not disrupt Indonesia’s cooperation with other countries, including the United States.
The government will utilise various supply sources as long as they provide benefits for Indonesia.
The national crude oil requirement reaches around 300 million barrels per year.
“How about our agreements with other countries, including the United States? I say that our crude needs every year are approximately 300 million barrels. So we take everything; whatever is beneficial for our country must be done,” Bahlil stated at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Thursday (16/4/2026).
Domestic marketable oil production is in the range of 600,000 to 610,000 barrels per day.
This gap means Indonesia must import around 1 million barrels per day.
“In the midst of these global conditions, we must be able to seek oil reserves from various sources, not just one country, but almost all countries,” he said.
Bahlil emphasised that the government applies the principle of active independent politics in energy policy.
Indonesia is opening cooperation with various countries, including Russia and African countries such as Nigeria.
The government continues to respect all agreements that have been reached, including with the United States.
Indonesia has a commitment to purchase energy products from the US worth $15 billion.
“We can shop anywhere as long as we fulfil commitments with countries with which we have cooperated, including Russia, then Africa, Nigeria, and especially what we value is also our agreement with the United States,” he explained.
“The price, we will always seek the best price. Clearly, we will try not to exceed the market price. A price below the market is much better, but at least the same as the market price,” he said.
