London (ANTARA) - The International Maritime Organization (IMO) stated on Monday (4/5) that ships operating near the Strait of Hormuz must continue to apply “maximum vigilance”.

The statement follows reports of United States (US) operations to “guide” stranded ships out of the area.

In a written response to Xinhua, an IMO spokesperson said: “We are aware of the reports but do not have further details. We continue to urge ships to apply maximum vigilance in the region.”

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday (3/5) that the US would begin transit facilitation operations on Monday to “guide” ships stuck through the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, Iran’s military command warned on Monday that any foreign armed forces, particularly the US, would be attacked if they attempt to approach or enter the strait.

The UK’s Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that the US has established an enhanced security area south of the Traffic Separation Scheme in the Strait of Hormuz to support ship transits.

Nevertheless, UKMTO warned that the maritime security threat level in the region remains “critical” due to ongoing regional military activities.
