Immigration Policy and Demonstrations Fuel Islamophobia Concerns in the United States
As March 2026 approaches, the socio-political situation in the United States has intensified significantly. Aggressive immigration policies implemented by President Donald Trump’s administration, coupled with sharp political rhetoric, have reportedly triggered a surge in Islamophobic incidents to the highest level in history. This has prompted large-scale demonstrations across various states and created an atmosphere of apprehension for Muslim communities observing Ramadan.
The largest Muslim advocacy organisation in the United States, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), released shocking data on Tuesday, 10 March 2026. Between 2025 and early 2026, a total of 8,683 complaints related to anti-Muslim and anti-Arab sentiment were recorded. This figure surpassed the previous record from 2024.
Immigration tightening policies and large-scale operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have triggered massive civil resistance. In Los Angeles, New York, and Minneapolis, thousands of citizens took to the streets in actions titled “National Shutdown”. The action was triggered by a tragic incident in which a nurse named Alex Pretti died in Minneapolis from gunshot wounds inflicted by federal officials whilst attempting to document an immigration operation. Demonstrators demanded the dissolution of ICE and an end to law enforcement tactics deemed to violate human rights.
This situation has directly impacted the solemnity of Muslim worship during Ramadan. In Paterson, New Jersey, which has the highest per capita Muslim population in the United States, many residents have chosen to limit activities outside their homes due to fear of being caught in immigration raids or becoming targets of hatred.
Imam Yusuf Abdulle from the Islamic Association of North America stated that many mosques were forced to cancel communal iftar (breaking of the fast) events due to security concerns and economic pressures. “The fear is real and will persist for a long time,” he said.
The federal government, through President Trump, has asserted that these measures were taken for national security and to reduce illegal immigration. However, critics argue that the policies damage the social fabric and foster division within American society.
