Immigration and Corrections Minister: 44 Inmates Receive Remission for Lunar New Year 2026
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Immigration and Corrections (Imipas) Agus Andrianto stated that 44 inmates of the Confucian faith received special remission (RK) and sentence reductions (PMP) to mark Lunar New Year 2026.
Agus explained in a statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday that of the 44 remission recipients, 43 were inmates who received Category I Special Remission with sentence reductions ranging from 15 days to two months, whilst one was a juvenile detainee who received Category I Special Sentence Reduction of 15 days.
"The state honours those who have demonstrated positive change during their correctional period, including through the granting of special remission and special sentence reductions on this Lunar New Year celebration," he said.
According to Agus, the granting of remission represents the state's recognition of inmates who have shown positive behavioural change during their time in correctional institutions and detention centres.
He stressed that remission is granted selectively and objectively to inmates and juvenile detainees who have fulfilled both administrative and substantive requirements in accordance with prevailing legislation.
"Beyond serving as recognition of good behaviour, this remission policy is also part of the government's efforts to reduce overcrowding in prisons and detention centres," the Minister explained.
Similarly, Director General of Corrections Mashudi conveyed that the granting of remission on major religious occasions represents the fulfilment of inmates' rights as well as part of a sustainable correctional strategy.
"Remission and sentence reductions are not merely reductions in punishment, but rather correctional instruments that encourage inmates to continue improving themselves and preparing for reintegration into society," Mashudi said.
With the granting of Special Remission and Special Sentence Reductions for Lunar New Year 2026, the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) recorded savings of Rp25,447,500 in inmate meal costs.
Mashudi further affirmed Ditjenpas's commitment to fulfilling inmates' rights in accordance with prevailing legislation and supporting correctional programmes that are measurable, accountable, and equitable.
