KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): Thirty-one illegal immigrants escaped
from a Malaysian detention center early on Saturday after
knocking out a policeman on guard duty, the national Bernama news
agency reported.
Seremban Police Chief Abdul Khalid Abu Hasan said the 21
Bangladeshis and 10 Indonesians escaped from the detention center
in the southern state of Negeri Sembilan at around 3:45 a.m. on
Saturday.
Three Bangladeshis were apprehended soon after a search was
launched in the surrounding areas. The search was continuing for
the other escapees, who are aged in their 30s and 40s, the agency
reported.
Malaysian immigration officials have intensified moves against
illegal immigrants in the wake of the country's economic
recovery.
