ILO holds seminar on labor laws
JAKARTA (JP): The International Labor Organization (ILO) will
hold an Asia-Pacific symposium today to discuss matters related
to international labor conventions.
Herman van der Laan, head of the ILO office in Jakarta, said
the symposium, jointly organized with the Ministry of Manpower,
will bring over 50 representatives of governments and of
employers and workers organizations from 26 regional countries.
Foreign countries to attend the four-day meeting are, among
others, Australia, Bangladesh, China, Fiji, India, Iran, Japan,
Kuwait, Korea, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia and Pakistan.
"The symposium aims at familiarizing the delegates with the
procedures and topics of the forthcoming 82th international labor
conference to be held in Geneva in June," van der Laan said.
One topic is on safety and health in mines. "Workers in this
sector are subject to manifold dangers in the workplace and the
new instruments will try to overcome the dangers."
Other topics include the expansion of the existing ILO labor
inspection convention to activities in the non-commercial service
sector and the "home as workplace" sector, which could affect
millions of workers worldwide. (rms)
