ILO holds seminar on labor laws<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The International Labor Organization (ILO) will
\nhold an Asia-Pacific symposium today to discuss matters related
\nto international labor conventions.<\/p>\n
Herman van der Laan, head of the ILO office in Jakarta, said
\nthe symposium, jointly organized with the Ministry of Manpower,
\nwill bring over 50 representatives of governments and of
\nemployers and workers organizations from 26 regional countries.<\/p>\n
Foreign countries to attend the four-day meeting are, among
\nothers, Australia, Bangladesh, China, Fiji, India, Iran, Japan,
\nKuwait, Korea, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia and Pakistan.<\/p>\n
"The symposium aims at familiarizing the delegates with the
\nprocedures and topics of the forthcoming 82th international labor
\nconference to be held in Geneva in June," van der Laan said.<\/p>\n
One topic is on safety and health in mines. "Workers in this
\nsector are subject to manifold dangers in the workplace and the
\nnew instruments will try to overcome the dangers."<\/p>\n
Other topics include the expansion of the existing ILO labor
\ninspection convention to activities in the non-commercial service
\nsector and the "home as workplace" sector, which could affect
\nmillions of workers worldwide. (rms)<\/p>",
