Illegal Parking in Blok M Causes Losses, Visitors Demand Non-Stop Enforcement
JAKARTA – The proliferation of illegal parking attendants in the Blok M area, South Jakarta, has been a source of complaints from visitors due to practices such as double parking.
They are calling for routine supervision and concrete solutions from the authorities to prevent the problem from recurring.
Several visitors assess that temporary crackdowns, such as registering illegal parking attendants (jukir), have not been effective in providing a deterrent effect.
“As obedient as people may be, if they need money, they’ll do it again and come back,” said one visitor, Dimas (25), when met by Kompas.com at the location on Thursday (2/4/2026).
“There must be the Transportation Agency or police here permanently, guarding non-stop during operating hours,” Dimas added.
He also noted that the lack of information about official parking locations often traps visitors into using illegal parking services. Therefore, socialisation and clear signage are needed so that visitors can distinguish between official and unofficial parking areas.
Similar complaints were voiced by another visitor, Aldi (23). He acknowledged that the limited availability of official parking spaces is one of the reasons why illegal parking attendants remain prevalent.
According to him, visitors are often forced to use unofficial parking when the main parking areas, such as the basement, are full.
“What I think would be effective is daily patrols. There should be at least one or two Transportation Agency officers here checking, so things like this (illegal parking) can be minimised,” he said.
Aldi added that increasing the capacity of official parking is also an urgent need to reduce dependence on illegal parking.
Observations by Kompas.com at the location showed the underground parking area in a crowded condition. Several motorbikes were even seen parked beyond the entrance access.
“It’s like this, overloaded. So indeed, there needs to be an addition, at least not just in the basement,” said Aldi.
“The problem is that the lift is always crowded,” said another visitor, Bima (27).
This situation forces motorbike users to share lift access with car-using visitors, thereby increasing waiting times and discomfort.
Previously, officers from the South Jakarta Transportation Sub-Department along with the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) had cracked down on illegal parking attendants in the Blok M area on Tuesday (31/3/2026).
Head of the South Jakarta Transportation Sub-Department, Bernard Pasaribu, said that at least 10 illegal parking attendants had been registered. They were asked to sign statements promising not to resume operations.
He emphasised that his side would follow up if those parking attendants returned to violating the rules.
