Jakarta — Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Rano Karno, has affirmed that his administration will not tolerate illegal parking attendants who impose exorbitant fees, although he acknowledged such occurrences are commonplace, particularly at the start of Ramadan.

His remarks came in response to the proliferation of illegal parking attendants in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, who had been charging inflated parking tariffs. Eight illegal parking attendants in the area have been apprehended by police. They had been charging Rp60,000 for motorcycles and Rp100,000 for cars.

“We understand the situation — it doesn’t mean we tolerate it, but everything is being brought under control. Let us try to understand: this is a once-a-year situation, there is congestion, once a year is fine,” Rano told reporters on Wednesday, 18 February 2026.

Rano added that enforcement against illegal parking attendants is ongoing, with some having been arrested and dealt with firmly.

“The parking attendants have been sorted out. Some had to be dealt with, others were arrested and given guidance. This is normal, and hopefully things will improve further,” he said.

On the same occasion, Rano confirmed that the Civil Service Police (Satpol PP) continues to be deployed alongside the national police and military to prevent illegal parking operations.

“Absolutely. Satpol PP, the police have been deployed, colleagues from the military have also been deployed. The tourism-specific Satpol PP unit has also been deployed. Let us welcome this — it is still early days. Hopefully within two to three days, things will be far more orderly,” Rano concluded.

Police arrested eight men suspected of being thugs posing as illegal parking attendants in the Tanah Abang area. They had been charging Rp100,000 for cars and Rp60,000 for motorcycles.

Tanah Abang Police Chief AKBP Dhimas Prasetyo said those apprehended had been taken to the police station for questioning. The action was taken to prevent the viral issue from spreading further and to restore order.

“The police station has taken action regarding the viral reports to prevent them from escalating and to create a conducive environment, by bringing in parking attendants suspected of illegal fee collection for questioning,” he explained.
