Dua for breaking the fast
Breaking the fast is not only about quenching thirst and hunger. Muslims are also advised to increase supplications when breaking the fast.
Here are two duas for breaking the fast based on the explanation of Ustadz Adi Hidayat in the video ‘Tentang Doa Berbuka Puasa (Part 2)’ uploaded to the YouTube channel.
Version A
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَـأُ، وابْــتَلَّتِ العُرُوقُ، وثَــبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِن شَاءَ اللهُ
Dzahabazh zhoma’u wabtallatil ’uruqu wa tsabatal ajru, insyaallah
Meaning: “The thirst has vanished, the veins are refreshed, and the reward is assured, if Allah wills.” (HR. Abu Daud)
Version B
Allaahumma laka sumtu wabika aamantu wa’alaa rizqika afthortu birahmatika yaa arhamar-roohimiin.
Meaning: “O Allah, for You I have fasted, in You I believe, and upon Your provision I have broken the fast, with Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.” (HR Bukhari and Muslim)
According to Ustadz Adi Hidayat, the practice for the dua of breaking the fast can be to combine the two. Thus, the Dzahabazh zhoma’u dua is recited as an opening, followed by the Allahumma laka shumtu.
When is the right time to recite the dua for breaking the fast? According to Almanhaj, the Prophet Muhammad typically recited the Dzahabazh zhoma’u dua after breaking his fast.
This also aligns with the meaning of the dua for breaking the fast, namely, “The thirst has vanished and the veins have been moistened…”.
