The identity of Bitcoin’s creator, long a mystery, is slowly coming into focus. A recent investigative report from The New York Times names Adam Back as the figure suspected to be behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of Bitcoin. Satoshi Nakamoto has long been known as an anonymous figure who created Bitcoin, the world’s first cryptocurrency. His true identity has never been fully revealed since Bitcoin’s introduction, leading to various speculations within the technology and crypto communities. Adam Back is no stranger to the industry. The 55-year-old is recognised as a leading cryptographer and CEO of the blockchain company Blockstream. He is also an early figure in the development of the Bitcoin community. In the investigative report, journalist John Carreyrou presents several arguments strengthening this suspicion. Carreyrou is widely known for exposing the major Theranos scandal in 2015. One of the main findings in this investigation is the similarity in writing style between Back’s and Nakamoto’s posts on various old online forums. This similarity includes word choice, spelling, and sentence structure. Additionally, the online activity patterns of the two are said to share similar timings. This is considered an additional clue pointing to Back. Another factor strengthening the suspicion is Back’s involvement in developing Hashcash, a “proof-of-work” system that forms a crucial foundation in Bitcoin’s mining mechanism. This investigation, which lasted about a year, is not the first attempt to uncover Nakamoto’s identity. Several other names have previously been mentioned as strong candidates, such as Hal Finney and Nick Szabo. Even in the documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, Peter Todd was once accused of being Bitcoin’s creator. Although linked again to Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity, Adam Back has denied the latest claim. He issued his affirmation through a series of posts on platform X. Back stated that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto, although he acknowledges having been involved in research on cryptography, digital privacy, and electronic money since the early 1990s.
