ICRC Condemns Attacks on Civilian Infrastructure Amid US Threats to Iran
Moscow (ANTARA) - The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, stated on Sunday (10/5) that her organisation condemns attacks on civilian infrastructure facilities amid US threats against Iran.
“Any deliberate threat to civilians – in statements and actions – is unjustifiable, inhumane, and devastates entire populations. We cannot normalise boundless war. We must restore humanity to conversations about conflict. Civilians and the infrastructure they rely on to survive must be protected,” she said.
Spoljaric made this statement during an interview with Iran’s IRNA news agency, when asked about threats of attacks on Iran’s power plants and bridges announced by US President Donald Trump in April.
On Thursday, Trump threatened Iran with new attacks if Tehran does not immediately sign an agreement with the US.
On 28 February, the US and Israel began attacking several targets in Iran, including Tehran, resulting in casualties and infrastructure damage. On 7 April, the two belligerents announced a two-week ceasefire.
Subsequent talks between the US and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, ended without conclusion. Although there was no announcement of resumed hostilities, the US subsequently imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.
To date, mediators are still striving to restart talks to end the regional conflict.
