Vice Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia, Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono (Ibas), has expressed profound condolences on the passing of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, Try Sutrisno. The Vice President who served during the 1993-1998 period passed away at the age of 90.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. May Allah the Almighty accept all the worship and deeds of the deceased, forgive all his shortcomings, and place him in the finest place in His presence,” Ibas stated in his statement on Monday (2 March 2026).

“I offer my deepest condolences on the passing of Vice President Try Sutrisno, a figure who was not only a national leader, but also a role model in upholding constitutional values. In every aspect of his service, he always fought for the constitution of the nation in the pursuit of justice and the prosperity of the people. This dedication has been a vital foundation in the journey of our democracy and national life,” he added.

Ibas expressed that Try Sutrisno’s struggle in upholding constitutional values should be continued by the nation’s younger generation. In this way, Indonesia can become a strong and sovereign nation.

“As the succeeding generation, we feel a moral responsibility to continue his thinking and service. What has been inherited is not merely history, but also the direction and spirit to continue building a stronger, more sovereign Indonesia that stands with the people. May these values of struggle continue to live and serve as inspiration for us, the sons and daughters of the nation,” Ibas said.

For Ibas, the exemplary leadership demonstrated by Try Sutrisno serves as a concrete example of what selfless dedication means. Try Sutrisno’s departure leaves a legacy of exemplary leadership, dedication, and long years of service to the Indonesian nation.

Ibas emphasised that the fighting spirit and national values inherited by the deceased will continue to serve as inspiration for the succeeding generation in building a more just, advanced, and prosperous Indonesia.

“He was a true fighter, a patriot, and a nationalist who always thought of the nation’s progress. His sincerity, courage, and commitment in serving the nation and state are an invaluable inheritance. Indonesia has lost one of its finest sons, but his fighting spirit will continue to live in every step of the nation’s development forward,” he said.

“May Allah forgive him and have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, and absolve him. We also pray that the extended family of Vice President Try Sutrisno be granted patience, fortitude, and strength in facing this sorrow,” Ibas concluded.

For information, the late Try Sutrisno was a graduate of the Army Technical Academy in 1959 and had an extensive record of service to the state. He previously served as Chief of Staff of the Army (1986-1988) and Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia (1988-1993), before taking on the mandate of Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia.

Ibas also attended the state funeral ceremony held solemnly at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta. The military honours procession accompanied the deceased’s departure as the highest form of recognition for his services to the nation and state.
