Humane Security: Student Demonstration at Police Headquarters Proceeds Peacefully
Student demonstrations at the National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri) in South Jakarta have concluded. Police stated that the expression of opinion proceeded in a conducive manner.
Kombes Budi Hermanto, Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Metro Police (Polda Metro Jaya), ensured that the security operation for the demonstration was conducted with a humanitarian approach and respect for human rights.
“The implementation of this service and security was carried out with a focus on protection, emphasising the humanitarian aspect and paying attention to human rights,” Budi told journalists in front of the Police Headquarters in South Jakarta on Friday, 27 February 2026.
Budi expressed his appreciation to all parties, despite some dynamics occurring on the ground. He stated that no public facilities were damaged and no physical clashes occurred during the action.
“Although during the activity we witnessed some students hurling insults at police officers, and even writing unsavoury words on female police officers’ uniforms,” he explained.
Budi stated that police conducted the security operation patiently and did not respond to provocations. He reminded protesters that expressing aspirations during the holy month of Ramadan should maintain norms and ethics.
“We encourage, especially during this holy month of Ramadan, that there are norms and ethics we must uphold. How we respect members of the public who are fasting, even though there is a desire to express these aspirations,” he said.
Additionally, Budi also ensured that the aspirations voiced by students would be heard by the police, including by National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo as leader of the National Police Corps.
“This becomes an evaluation for us. The points to be raised represent an evaluation and learning opportunity for us within the police,” he said.
“(The request for an audience) we will convey and review. The Police Chief surely also watched this activity,” he added.
