How Much Sacrificial Meat is a Qurban Owner Entitled To? Here's the Explanation
The slaughter of sacrificial animals is a distinctive ritual of Eid al-Adha. The qurban owner (shohibul qurban) is entitled to the meat of the animal slaughtered in their name. According to the official website of Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership, Islam provides guidelines on the distribution of sacrificial meat. In Surah al-Hajj, verse 28, Allah SWT states: ‘… So eat thereof and feed the miserable and the poor.’ This verse indicates that the qurban owner may consume part of the meat, with the remainder to be given to the destitute and impoverished. In Surah al-Hajj, verse 36, Allah states: ‘… So eat thereof and feed the contented and the beggar.’ This verse indicates that recipients of sacrificial meat include those who ask for it and those who do not beg but still require assistance. Similar guidance is found in the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). As narrated by Ahmad, Muslim, and at-Tirmidzi: ‘From Buraidah, he said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “I had forbidden you from keeping the meat of sacrificial animals beyond three days so that those who are affluent could assist those who are not. Eat what is available to you, feed others, and store the remainder.” (Reported by Ahmad, Muslim, and at-Tirmidzi). In a Hadith narrated by Muslim from Abu Sa‘id, the Prophet (PBUH) said, ‘O people of Medina, do not consume sacrificial meat beyond three days.’ When they complained about having families, servants, and dependants, he replied, ‘Eat, feed others, retain, and store.’ (Reported by Muslim). In a Hadith reported by Bukhari and Muslim from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha, she said: ‘During the time of the Prophet (PBUH), some families from the countryside came regarding sacrificial meat. He instructed them to store for three days, then donate the remainder.’ He later added, ‘I had forbidden you due to the influx of people; therefore, eat, store, and give in charity.’ (Agreed upon by Bukhari and Muslim). Based on these sources, it is understood that sacrificial meat is intended for three groups.
