How Heavy is the Responsibility of a Leader

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – In a historical account, Caliph Sulaiman bin Abdul Malik set out to perform the Hajj pilgrimage accompanied by his companion, Umar bin Abdul Aziz. During the pilgrimage, Sulaiman invited Umar to climb a hill. From the top of the hill, the pilgrims from all corners of the world, of various tribes, languages, and skin colours, were clearly visible.

Seeing his people in such great numbers, the caliph was astonished. Moments later, a sense of pride enveloped him. He then said to Umar beside him, “Look, O Umar, how many people I lead now!”

Hearing that statement, Umar felt there was something that needed to be corrected. He immediately replied, “That is true, O Caliph, they are your people now, but you must realise, O my brother, that they will become your adversaries before Allah in the hereafter, demanding accountability from you on the Day of Judgement.”

Upon hearing Umar’s words, Caliph Sulaiman’s legs trembled, his face flushed with fear. Only sobs were heard from him, unable to speak a word, as he contemplated the inevitable state he would face on the Day of Judgement.

Becoming a leader or a prominent figure is the dream of many people. Since ancient times, humans have had an extraordinary tendency to pursue such social status. For many, a position guarantees self-satisfaction and a comfortable life. Moreover, if occupying strategic positions in government, it is certainly very tempting. From the above story, at least there are two important things we can take as lessons.

First, be selective in choosing advisors. The wisdom and prudence of a leader are greatly determined by the people around them. Their policies will align with the principles of justice. This can happen if their colleagues or closest aides are wise individuals, who are not dazzled by the glitter of the world. Nor are they merely seeking to curry favour with their superiors.

Holders of power need companions who can provide the best solutions to existing problems. How terrible it would be if a leader is surrounded by devilish whisperers, who only instill evil ideas that bring suffering to the people. Evil whisperers are reluctant to give advice when their superior errs; instead, they let it happen and claim to be ready to take the blame to provide a sense of security.
