Houses for pedicab drivers

Houses for pedicab drivers

PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: The local government is keeping its
promise to help the poor, building 50 houses which it will offer
to pedicab drivers without dawn-payment.

Musi Banyuasin regent Arifin Djalil said here on Thursday that
the project was part of the government's efforts to get rid of
slums.

He said the initiative to provide simple houses to pedicab
drivers was designed to coincide with the golden anniversary of
Indonesian independence on Aug. 17.

He said the government would build more low-cost houses, each
costing Rp 5 million (US$2,200), on a 1.5 hectare plot of land in
the same suburb.

He said local land developers would be required to contribute
to the project. (rms)
