House Speaker urges Indonesia to maintain non-aligned stance in Board of Peace
Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani has urged that Indonesia must maintain its independent and active foreign policy stance following its membership of the Board of Peace (BoP).
She stated that Indonesia’s participation in the BoP must make a tangible contribution to resolving the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and advancing the realisation of Palestinian independence.
“The House of Representatives is committed to promoting a world order that is more just, peaceful and prosperous for all humanity,” Puan said in her address at the Plenary Session marking the close of the parliamentary sitting period at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Thursday.
She also called on the government to optimise Indonesia’s strategic position as President of the United Nations Human Rights Council within the BoP.
According to Puan, this has been affirmed in the UN Charter and the mandate of the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution, under which Indonesia participates in maintaining world order based on independence, lasting peace and social justice.
“This principle ensures that Indonesian diplomacy is not merely symbolic, but stands firmly on sovereignty, equality and respect for international law,” she said.
Within the framework of parliamentary diplomacy, Puan noted that the House has strengthened bilateral relations through meetings with parliamentary delegations from friendly nations, including South Korea, Japan, Sudan, Kuwait, Iran, Cuba, Albania, South Africa, Algeria and the United States.
“Through its diplomatic function, the House of Representatives plays an active role in supporting Indonesia’s foreign policy, building trust between nations and initiating dialogue on various global issues,” she said.
