House of Tugu Jakarta Enters TIME's World's Greatest Places 2026
JAKARTA — Amid Jakarta’s increasingly uniform march of modernisation, a cultural oasis has captured the world’s attention. TIME Magazine has officially released its World’s Greatest Places 2026 list, and House of Tugu Jakarta has been selected as Indonesia’s sole representative on this prestigious curated list.
House of Tugu’s inclusion is noteworthy. TIME highlighted how the venue delivers an exceptional experience rooted in strong cultural values whilst reintroducing Peranakan heritage to an international audience.
In the 1960s, Anhar Setjadibrata embarked on journeys across the Indonesian archipelago, witnessing a troubling reality: historical artefacts neglected and traditions gradually fading away. Together with his wife, Wedya Julianti, Anhar began collecting these items. What initially was a personal effort at historical preservation gradually transformed into the philosophical foundation of Tugu Hotels & Restaurants Group.
Lucienne Anhar, co-owner of Tugu Group and custodian of her father’s vision, emphasised that Tugu was never designed as a conventional hospitality business.
House of Tugu Jakarta serves as a space where visitors encounter Jakarta’s complex historical layers. Within its spaces, Jajaghu operates as a culinary destination that revives ancestral recipes from across the Nusantara in contemporary elegance. Babah Koffie by Kawisari celebrates the heritage of one of Java’s oldest coffee estates from the colonial era.
2026 will undoubtedly be a busy year for House of Tugu. However, the most anticipated opening is The Huang Museum in June 2026. The museum will house thousands of historical artefacts from the Tugu family’s private archives, including rare collections never before publicly displayed.
