Jakarta — House of Representatives (DPR) member Ahmad Iman Sukri has taken the view that state-owned enterprise PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara’s (Persero) move to import approximately 105,000 pickup trucks from India for the Merah Putih Village/Sub-district Cooperative (KDKMP) programme stands in stark contrast to President Prabowo Subianto’s stated commitments.

“President Prabowo takes great pride in using locally produced vehicles. All ministers and government officials have been directed to use the Maung, and encouraged not to use foreign products. This represents pride in and commitment to the use of domestic products,” said Iman, who also serves as Deputy Chairman of the DPR’s Legislation Body, in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Saturday.

He therefore questioned Agrinas’s plans, noting that Prabowo has already allocated a budget for the production of locally manufactured vehicles.

“The fact is, the national automotive industry’s capacity remains more than adequate to meet commercial vehicle needs, including pickups. Light commercial pickup vehicles are actually a domestic strength — not only meeting domestic demand but also being exported,” he said.

He continued, “To my knowledge, based on data from domestic automotive manufacturers, domestic production capacity is very large, reaching up to 2.5 million vehicles, including pickups. If we are capable of making our own vehicles, why must we import?”

Meanwhile, he reminded Agrinas that as a state-owned enterprise (BUMN), with limited state budgets, weakening purchasing power, and global economic pressures, the government including SOEs must exercise extra caution in their spending.

“SOEs must be careful in using the people’s money. Even if they wish to spend, there must be multiplier effects for the Indonesian economy. It must not end up benefiting particular groups or individuals,” he said.

Furthermore, he emphasised that domestic industrial facilities and ecosystems remain very strong, leaving no justification for importing hundreds of thousands of vehicles from India.

“There is actually no reason to import commercial vehicles. Our country is very capable of manufacturing any type of commercial vehicle, including pickups, and this also contravenes Law Number 3 of 2014 on Industry,” he said.

The news of Agrinas’s import plans was previously announced by Indian automotive company Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd (M&M) on the company’s website on 4 February 2026. M&M announced it would supply 35,000 units of the Scorpio Pickup.
