Jakarta (ANTARA) — Member of the House of Representatives' Commission VIII, Selly Andriany Gantina, has demanded severe and maximum punishment for Brigadier Masias Siahaya, who was found to have assaulted two students in Southeast Maluku, resulting in the death of one of them.

"This is truly cruel and barbaric — how can a law enforcement officer attack students? They are clearly no match. The maximum severe punishment must be handed down to this individual," said Selly, as quoted in Jakarta on Saturday.

According to her, the incident reflects the arrogance of security personnel, and the punishment imposed must serve as a sufficient deterrent to prevent similar occurrences in future.

Beyond identifying human rights violations incompatible with police codes of ethics and the Criminal Code, Selly urged maximum sanctions in the form of life imprisonment as evidence of law enforcement's failure to guarantee the safety of citizens, particularly the nation's younger generation.

"Furthermore, this must be addressed to prevent future conflict. The ethics hearing must be conducted openly to align with the President's aspirations for police reform," said Selly, firmly asserting that Dishonourable Discharge (PTDH) must be a non-negotiable ethical consequence.

Previously, Brigadier Masias Siahaya was reported to have struck the head of a Southeast Maluku State Islamic Junior Secondary School student, Arianto Tawakal (14), leaving him drenched in blood and resulting in his death. The perpetrator, who was stationed at Mobile Brigade Pioneer C Headquarters, also assaulted Nasrim Karim (15), Arianto's elder brother, causing him to suffer a fractured bone.

Selly further called for reconciliation efforts. The perpetrator's commanding officer, she said, must meet with the victims' family to deliver a personal apology as a form of institutional moral responsibility.

Additionally, citing House Speaker Puan Maharani, Selly urged the state, through its relevant institutions, to provide comprehensive recovery support for the victims' family and the surviving victim.

Such recovery measures should encompass long-term psychological counselling, medical rehabilitation for the victim who suffered bone fractures, educational guarantees, and appropriate restitution or compensation.

Selly views these recovery efforts as vital not merely for healing physical wounds and trauma, but also for ensuring that the victims' rights as citizens are fully restored with dignity.

"The state must not stop at punishing the perpetrator; it must also deliver complete justice, including social and mental recovery for the bereaved family," she said.
