Electrification of households through migration to induction stoves represents a strategic step to reduce Indonesia’s dependence on LPG imports, which increasingly burden the state budget. “Our LPG consumption currently reaches approximately 8 million metric tons per year, with the majority still met through imports. This is a significant burden on our trade balance,” stated Deputy Chairman of House of Representatives Commission XII, Sugeng Suparwoto, at the House of Representatives building in Jakarta on Monday (13/4/2026). He explained that the use of induction stoves is more efficient than conventional gas stoves. The use of electricity for cooking is seen to reduce household operational costs while also easing the government’s energy subsidy burden. In effect, he said, the use of electricity in the household sector, including induction stoves, would save around 30 percent compared to the use of fossil energy such as subsidised LPG. “We will significantly reduce import dependence,” he stated. He added that the national electricity system is currently in a strong condition to support this migration, with the primary energy supply for power generation well maintained. “We have a reliable electricity supply from domestic strength. By converting import-based energy like LPG into electricity-based energy, we not only save the budget but also strengthen national energy sovereignty right from the people’s kitchens,” he said.
