House Commission XII Highlights Rising Workplace Accidents at PT Obsidian Stainless Steel
House of Representatives Commission XII has highlighted the increasing number of workplace accidents at the PT Obsidian Stainless Steel (PT OSS) industrial zone in 2025. Based on data received, 13 workplace accidents have been recorded up to the middle of this year, including one latest incident reported today.
Commission XII member Rocky Candra, who led a specific visit to Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, on Friday (11/7/2025), expressed his concern and demanded an official explanation from the company's management.
"We are requesting an official statement from PT OSS regarding the concrete steps that have been taken to guarantee workers' safety," Rocky stated firmly.
In its response, PT OSS management said that some of the accidents were caused by human error. However, Rocky asserted that such a statement could not simply be accepted as a valid excuse.
"I have conveyed this directly — I do not accept that explanation. Workplace safety standards apply universally across all companies in Indonesia, whether it be PT OSS, PT VDNI, IWIP, IMIP, Freeport, or any other industrial zone," he said emphatically.
The Gerindra Party politician assessed that the high number of accidents indicated weaknesses in the company's workplace safety management system. He therefore emphasised the importance of providing guidance and special protection for local workers, particularly from surrounding communities.
"Local workers must receive adequate training and optimal protection," he added.
Rocky confirmed that the matter would be discussed further in a Commission XII session. His office would also request an official position from the Ministry of Manpower and push for a comprehensive evaluation through the Mineral and Coal Working Committee (Panja Minerba).
